In our Phonemic Awareness Curriculum (Heggerty) students learn to identify and orally manipulate individual sounds in words. Students will learn about consonants, short vowels, digraphs, blends, and rhyming words. They will also learn to segment and blend together the sounds in words. In our phonics curriculum (Sonday) students will learn proper letter formation, letter identification/sounds, sight words, and how to read and write CVC words and phrases.
Our Readers and Writers Workshop model provides students with a whole group mini lesson with a specific focus and then gives students the chance to apply that focus independently and in small groups. Students will conference with the teacher and have time for reflection each day. Students will learn a variety of reading strategies and how to read and write basic sentences. We will also do different writing types including narrative, information, and persuasive writing.
Our Math curriculum (Go Math) students will particiapte in units focusing on number sense (1-100), addition/subtraction, measurement and data, and 2D/3D shapes. We will also use math centers for engaging practice and small group work with the teacher.
In Social Studies students will learn about rules, family, symbols, jobs in the community, and more. In Science students will learn about the needs of plants and animals, how plants and animals change their environment, weather patterns, and forces (pushes and pulls).
Our Second Step curriculum helps students learn social emotional skills including how to communicate their feelings, show empathy and understand others, focus their attention, have a growth mindset, and be a great learner.
Students will participate in weekly PE lessons focused on gross motor skills (hopping, skipping, galloping, running, etc.) as well as different active games and being a good sport. They will also have time with our Legarza Coach Specialist every other week.
Students will receive weekly music, library, and tech lab time with our specialists. They will have art in the classroom weekly as well as art with our specialist every other week.
Throughout the year we will be implementing projects that combine our Potrait of a Learner outcomes and curricular goals in authentic, hands on ways. Be on the lookout for more information and ways you can help support us!
