April 8 – 12

**There will be no school next week, April 13 – 21 due to spring break.



This week in reading we will be reading the biography Salt in His Shoes by Deloris Jordan. We will use this story to focus on identifying the lesson, or moral, in the story. This is what the author wants us to learn from reading the story. We will be using evidence from the story to support our answers. Check out the poster below for some questions we ask ourselves to help identify the lesson.

We will also be learning about suffixes. Suffixes are added to the end of words and change their meaning. For example, the suffix -ful means full of. So the word beautiful means full of beauty. This week we will be focusing on the suffixes -able, -ed, -ful, and -less. Check out the poster below for their meaning and some examples.

We will be working on the phonics sounds al/el (at the end of words) as well.


This week in Math we will begin focusing more on division. When we think about division we focus on breaking numbers apart into smaller, equal groups. We can also view it as repeated subtraction (the opposite of multiplication). Check out the example below.

This week we will be testing over the skills we have learned this unit. Students will be tested over the following materials:

  • Skip counting by 10s, 5s, and 2s
  • Solving multiplication problems using arrays, repeated addition, equal groups, and number lines
  • Solving division problems using equal groups
